COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITY) 

Knowledge/Capacity  

  • Expertise in the theory, concepts and best practices in key topic areas associated with this position, including: strength-based community development; social determinants of health; health in all policies; public policy analysis and process. 

  • Knowledge of key topic areas associated with this position, including: public health principles and practices; policy/advocacy continuum; health disparities; health equity. 

  • Demonstrated expertise in several elements of healthy communities in which Vitalyst currently focuses (e.g., food; transportation; housing; community design) 

  • Understanding of and experience with influencing the policy process. 

  • Understanding of coalitions and how they can influence policy and practices. 

  • Understanding of the roles of the public, private and independent sectors, including the multiple roles foundations can play, in creating policy change. 

  • Demonstrated competence and humility in racial equity and diversity.  

  • Capacity to link community interests and capacities with potential opportunities. 

  • Current knowledge of Arizona, regional and national trends and how they relate to Vitalyst’s work. 

Skills 

  • Policy analysis, program evaluation, and/or research.  

  • Advanced oral, presentation and written communication skills, including: active listening; conflict resolution; persuasion; ability to interact with the media; consensus building; coaching and mentoring. 

  • Convene, facilitate and manage groups and coalitions, often with diverse backgrounds, cultures, sectors and perspectives.  

  • Establish respectful and collegial relationships with a wide variety of people (e.g., undocumented refugees; city councilmembers; academic researchers; community organizers; Board of Trustees) 

  • Manage complex and competing requirements and interests. 

  • Use and monitor external consultants effectively. 

  • Connect Vitalyst’s mission and vision to current policy and political environments. 

  • Create and recommend an annual budget that supports Vitalyst’s vision, mission and values. 

  • Understand, communicate with and work well with representatives from grant recipient organizations. 

  • Disciplined, self-starter, accustomed to working without intense supervision. 

  • Understanding the inter-disciplinary nature of social determinants of health. 

Salary: $80,000 - $90,000 depending on experience

Required education: Bachelor’s degree in fields such as public administration, nonprofit management, political science/urban studies, community design. (Master’s degree preferred) 

Preferred Experience: At least 6 years of relevant, responsible work experience in community development, urban planning, government, or nonprofit service. Previous work experience with local, state and federal agencies. Experience working with affordable housing, food systems and/or multi-modal transportation systems.
